Odors — as they float about us, flatter, infatuate. Remind of distant countries and cultures. Of off-days we were there. And the plenty of which we, breathing in, took back into day-to-day life. Unforgotten – immortal and, above all, permanently – inspiring!
So, as Schiller needed the rotten apple in the half opened drawer to be Schiller. The rotten apple as source of an ideal of freedom whose the fanfare still centuries later calls daily for new awakening.
Odors — here and now then, no, no, nothing rotten, rather nothing more typical than that of

Winkler 11/8. – On vélin as invented about 1750 by Baskerville and also produced in Germany since 1783, on which “a much finer impression (could) be achieved than on laid” (paper; Löffler-Kirchner III, 486).
With narrow little margin around the borderline, the print of which is interrupted at the left upper edge for 5 and 6 cm resp. and partly somewhat tender at the lower edge. The trimming here then also immediately below the inscription. At the center of the same besides a small paper defect minimally affecting the outmost grasses of the edge as also the 8.
Come to Germany with his mother in 1806 and here to a manor near Jena, Ekeman first devoted himself to agriculture, to turn to the arts after the Napoleonic Wars with educational stations Augsburg, Munich & Vienna. Already in 1821 he was appointed professor and director of the newly founded Royal Lithographic Institute in Stuttgart. Nagler (1837) emphasized his “decided talent for the subject of landscape … his landscapes after famous masters (are) excellent”, here, however, a work of his own and therefore one of the especially desirable examples of his artistic qualities.

and with regard to the scale best first (c. 1 : 8.9 mill.) after Kirilov’s (c. 1 : 11.7 mill.) from 1734 and before that by Truscot & Schmidt from 1776 (c. 1 : 7.5 mill.) a
as only adequate.
As reverence for this irrespective of too much haste grand cartographic milestone, still initiated by Peter the Great as most urgent and realized by the Imperial Academy of Sciences founded by him in the year of his decease (1725). Which the great Euler as co-editor pointed out

As reverence almost even more so yet for Mother Russia and her soul, whose literature, music, and art down to the grandiose first movement of Shostakovich’s Seventh plowed deep furrows into the western cultural landscape. Yet last, but not least, as reverence for the vastness fanned out in this. Feel this leather! Experience its thickness standing out from conventional binding leather, even though reservations had to be made from this, resulting in a welcome fine marbling.

niemeyer’s — where even the leather is in tune
Just as then also to Mother Russia’s great Peter proving so modern who understood a modern mapping of the country as the alpha & omega of the way into a new Russia and from which far-sightedness then in such a manner present
originated. For while in Central Europe towards the end of the 17th century the cartographic development largely had come to a close already and new maps mostly presented enhancements in detail only, a modern cartography based on scientific land surveying in Russia – and thereby also in Asia – sets in only with the early 18th century. By the famous punkty from 1721 as “The first official instructions on land survey and map-making” (Goldenberg & Postnikov, see literature) as whose co-author Peter the Great is supposed. So on occasion of his first stay in Holland 1697 the latter then also learnt “under the direction of 17-year-old Marie de Wilde (daughter of the merchant and collector Jacobus de W. in Amsterdam to whom he was on friendly terms) the use of the etching-needle … (for) engraving and etching is closely connected with the printing of maps” (Horst Gerson, Ausbreitung und Nachwirkung der holländ. Malerei, 1983, page 516). In short,

“ Russian mapping, sponsored by Peter the Great and his associates, is known to have followed the way of intensive scientific development in connection with the state reforms and an active foreign policy in the 18th century. The fulfillment of new economic, administrative, cultural, military and political tasks, conditioned by the development of productive forces, required comprehensive studies of the country as well as the compilation and use of new complete and accurate maps. The creation of the All-Russian market necessitated the compiling of general maps and atlases while an expansion of economic relations between different regions generated a need for more detailed maps of particular areas. From the point of view of the history of cartography, we can find in this period a rich field for studying the process of transition from the national traditional methods of large-scale mapping (drawings) to surveys and map constructions on a scientific base.
This process required the creative reworking
of the West-European cartographic methods
by Russian cartographers as well as application
of the national mapping traditions
to the conditions of a vast area of the country ”
This was the object of the most highly patronized works of the geographical department within the Academy of Sciences founded by Peter the Great who for instance during an expedition to the coast of Kamchatka in 1719 dispatched two officers of his fleet to answer
the question posed by Leibniz
with respect to a nexus between Asia and America .
Also supposed to be one of the authors of the famous “punkty” – “The first official instructions on land survey and map-making” – from 1721 his “merits in the propagation of geographical knowledge” K. E. von Baer investigated (St. Petersburg, 1872; but see also K. Waliszewski, Peter the Great, N.Y. 1897, p. 435).
Sought was an utterly new map survey
subject to astronomically set fixed points. At the head of the western astronomers and geographers called to Russia was J. N. Delisle who worked there from 1725-47 and whose astronomical school founded at the Academy produced several Russian astronomers of high repute while his works for the atlas of 1745 – preceded by Ivan Kirilov’s less decisive one of 1734 – suffered by friction. A lack of currentness caused by this and poor accuracy then were the reasons for him why he did not like to see his name being related to the atlas. Just as contemporarily already M. V. Lomonosov – Coll. works, Moscow 1955, IX, 258 – had criticized :
“ Having looked at the archives and the published Atlas it is easy to understand how much more accurate and complete it could have been. ”
Assigned to Delisle as assistant was Gottfried Heinsius (Naumburg/Saale 1709 – Leipsic 1769), 1736 called to Petersburg as associate professor of astronomy and member of the Academy, who still in the year of publication followed a nomination to Leipsic See Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie XI, 656.
The detail maps 1-13 (1 : 1,527,000) covering the European part of Russia constructed markedly larger as against the 6 ones of the Asian part (1 : 3,360,000) – east of rivers Irtysh/Ob, but still up to the Pechora delta – and besides adorned with mostly richly figurative-instructive title cartouches. The Asian maps furnished with just a title ribbon. Whether this has to be attributed to the economical importance and the degree of acquaintance then or is an expression of the request for a more precipitate completion of the works as criticized as inappropriate by Delisle may be left undecided here.
For the German side of particular historical interest
Leibniz’s version of the Volga-Don Canal
as outlined 1697 in a conversation with the Russian ambassador in Hanover. – Furthermore of particular importance for the development of cartography the
supposedly first representation of the Kurile Islands
as chain of islands in cohesively named sequence
spread between northern Japan – its northern tips at the map’s lower edge – and Kamchatka. The disputed islands in the south of the chain correctly set off a little and situated closer to Japan. Thus without the obscure Staaten Island, Terre de la Compagnie and Terre de Jean da Gama still found in the maps by Kirilov and Haas, but also other, partly substantially later maps, practically making up the entire southern half of the chain of islands and besides by their placement, especially in the earlier maps, rather suggesting a yet also still largely unknown Aleutian Range come too far south.

Goldenberg-Postnikov’s résumé applies :
“ Atlases, maps and large scale plans become the principal basis for the development of topographic maps. They remain as remarkable monuments of the history of Russian cartography created by the toilers of field cartography … From the point of view of studying the maps of Russia of the 18th century as historico-geographical sources, the cartographic materials of general land survey are undoubtedly the most abundant and valuable sources in spite of their relative imperfections. ”

the famous German scholar Euler
pointed it out to his fatherland as example

Apart from that in the south up to the headwaters of Kerulen, Selenga & Irtysh – Caspian southern shore – River Arax, then crossing the Black Sea on about the line Trabzon – Constanca, westerly up to Kiev – Memel – Helsinki with parts of Finland – Norwegian border area. In the north up to about 85° northern latitude. All in all the

Early example of the use of aquatint the invention of which in 1768 (sic!) was commonly attributed to Le Prince. This seems to be dated due to an emerged sheet by Charpentier from 1756. Generally the experiments were ultimately in the air here, too. So Waldow, Illustr. Encyclopädie der graph. Künste, Leipsic 1884, regarded Johann Adam Schweikard’s (1722 Nuremberg 1787) endeavors in this connection 1759 as “first still imperfect attempts in this manner”.

Martin Pedersen Spangberg (Мартын Петрович Шпанберг, Strandby 1696 – Kronstadt 1761) commanded one of the two Pacific divisions of Bering’s second Kamchatka expedition (Great Northern Expedition, 1733-1743) and was in charge of the exploration of a sea route to the mouth of the Amur River and further to Japan, which he reached in 1739 after he had come to the Kurile island of Urup already the year before, and had mapped 31 further islands of the archipelago during the return.
In historic-cartographic respect of special interest
the use of most recent, mostly Russian cartographic knowledge in this generally “very rare map” (Lexikon der Kartographie 287) published first 1730, then 1738 (“Along with the draft of an explanation on that”) at Homann Heirs. – Of significant German interest the entry of the Volga-Don Canal highly topical in those years in both – for quasi a third one see above Seutter map – its versions then. So also the plan outlined 1697 by Leibniz.

XXII (1968), 85 ff., British Library and Library of Congress as the world’s greatest map collections. – Laterally trimmed on or just within the wide platemark. No. 47/50 copies of the expedition report, “Dedicated to my mother in faithfulness”, of one of the top magnates of the k.k. monarchy of his time, whose unparalleled most comprehensively laid out collection of Ridinger prints established, owing to the noble 2-volume catalog of the collection written by Ignaz Schwarz – the baron’s once personal copy no. I of the but two Roman numbered of moreover in total just 202 available here – his fame as art collector permanently, even though constituting merely a part of his universal interests in art.

with the stable smell of course reminding of the “Ringstraßen architect” Heinrich von Ferstel (1828-1883) as the father, the, together with Hansen and Schmidt, “creator of modern Vienna” (Catholic Encyclopedia) with the Ferstel Palace at the Herrengasse as the city’s most modern building of the period of promoterism as crown jewel, though originating in the Abensperg-Traun Palace of 1651 with on its part once the first water pipe in a private building in Vienna.
Son Carl married Amelie Hartmann – daughter of the married Vienna court actor couple Ernst Hartmann and Helene Schneeberger – , whose sister Emelie had been married with Max von Gutmann, Rudolf’s stepbrother, but Rudolf himself with Heinrich’s granddaughter Marianne.
With a company of five Baron Gutmann left Europe June 15, 1909 on the Lloyd steamer Kaiser Wilhelm II to reach, after short stays in New York, Chicago and the Yellowstone Park, Seattle on July 6 and by this the Norwegian steamer “Transit” chartered for the purpose of the hunting expedition
“ at the coasts of Kamchatka , North Siberia and Alaska ”
which they boarded on the eighth.
“ We sailed towards happy free hunting …
I felt the whole fascination which lies in renouncing civilization, to employ in the wild country the own strength, the own will, to enjoy the new, to expect the unexpected, in the heart the wish
to bag the mightiest animals of the polar country . ”
After initial big hunting luck on Bald Eagles at Juneau, the mightiest of which impressing by a span of 2.27 m, the walruses at Nome were on the wish list.
“ In Nome we chartered a wooden schooner as our iron steamer could not have withstood the pressure of the ice … With regard to the advanced season we had to search for the walruses … in the polar ice and sail the frequently tempestuous Bering Strait. ”
July 22 they sighted the East Cap, the most eastern point of the old world. And Diana travelled with them.
“ During the day we stayed with these Chukchis in their village. Then the storm had driven away the clouds and the sun drove away the storm. The most splendid night, transformed to day by the midnight sun, leads us across the polar circle … Now dark masses appear … and a muffled roar becomes audible. After barely two days of searching we had found the walruses! ”
With respect to bears at the Anadyr River & Cape Navarin as the most northern coastal settlements of Eastern Siberia just as at the Baron Korff Bay at the coast of Kamchatka they had been taken in. With the latter’s capital, Petropavlovsk,
then also the turning point was reached and via north of the Aleutian Islands they returned to the southern coast of Alaska.
It was a journey into regions whose game – so for instance a herd of moose or “Now the walruses recognized their enemy” – partly obviously never had sighted a human before, it was a hunting in jungles. Searched and experienced just in time before Kamchatka disappeared for decades as additionally military barred zone behind the Iron Curtain. “Not even presidents of other socialist countries were allowed by the government in Moscow to hunt there” (Horst Rademacher, [Volcanoes in Russia’s Wild East], in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung of December 28, 1995). – See the complete description.

Thienemann & Schwarz 1054. – IN THE RIDINGERS’ ORIGINAL COLORING from the unnumbered Colored Animal Kingdom created since 1754 and concluded finally posthumously not before 1773 (“Complete copies are next to untraceable”, so Weigel, Art Cat., part XXVIII, Ridinger Appendix 63a as merely 120-sheet torso, 1857 ! , but also just individual plates quite rarely on the market only, at niemeyer’s presently nevertheless the one as the others). – Remaining uncolored contrary to the prospectus, a second edition from the plates shortened even under loss of animals and with modified titling and the Ridinger inscription removed, yet now numbered, was published by Engelbrecht/Herzberg in Augsburg 1824/25.
The sable “is the most like the pine marten among the relations of the species … The shining silken coat, which is regarded already of old as
the most precious one among all the furs ,
costs the more the more unicolored it is … Most common it is presently still on Kamchatka where the almost inaccessible mountains provide refuge. In regard of its habits it is like our pine marten” (Meyers Konversations-Lexikon, 4th ed., XVI , 948 f.). The present one of the preferred chestnut and darker color with relatively little white:
“ (S)o we have … at once represented yet a Siberian Sable, whose little skin is
of great value with the Russians for its beauty ,
especially if it is black. Therefore they hunt for the same permanently and draw large sums of money each year from the sale of this fur good ”

Rarer sujet made in the rush (August 1763) for which the self-portrait of 1749 had to serve, of which he right away substituted his own head by that of Churchill. Several he added, the titles of the folio volumes – the third volume without title here, too – were adapted: Great George Street A List of the Subscribers to the North Britons & A New way to Pay old Debts, a comedy by Massenger. Also The Line of Beauty fell victim to grinding in face of such a stout, lusty, and rough person as Churchill is described. The print illustration now superpositioning the palette no more taken over by Cook than the caption.
Cook “made his mark as Hogarth engraver, too, whose complete work he has engraved in copy” (Thieme-Becker) and whose original format he maintained contrary to all later Hogarth editions in the present first, earlier edition. For some sheets not published by Hogarth himself Cook became their first engraver, just as he also gained approval of a contemporary connoisseur as Maximilian Speck von Sternburg.

Rarissimum of Russian cartography
and as Wilbrecht’s maps in general
of paramount rarity .
Imperial geographer, head of the above Geographic Department and master at the Mining Academy’s School of Engineering, cartographer, mathematician, and astronomer, his name is quoted also in connection with general atlases, as for instance the Russian New Atlas or collection of maps of all parts of the globe, Petersburg 1793 (Phillips 679), but still up to the 1960s his name was missing in cartographic standard indices and also Tooley’s Dictionary (1979) results in no more than the simple mention of the 1792 French version of
present one worked as separate map ,
the 1787 one of Cook’s Pacific discoveries, and the 1792 original edition of the Rossiiskoi atlas reflecting the administrative reforms of 1775, a second edition of which was published 1800. In respect of Petersburg both editions contain correspondingly only the map of its province (1 : 760,000), not the one of the closer environs worked contemporarily in a far larger scale of 1 : 190,000, which is
worked exceedingly instructive down to water & road network ,
with the highways expressly named ,
as for instance that to Moscow or the Great Road (today European route from Pskov [Pleskov]) through Gatchina to Tsarskoye Selo and, indeed, Petersburg. And provides a downright incredible plenty of details of the urban conditions about the mid-1790s (?). So the map department of the Russian National Library in respect of their paper copy (K 1-3an 2/226) presumably dated to late as 1796-1800 of the dateless Russian edition, as the leather copy here, too. And continuing
“ Such combination of topographic and hydrographic features allows to regard this map as a positive and important concluding result of activities of capital cartographer and hydrographer over the period of the whole eighteenth century. ”
Not mentioned in the description, however, the French version Carte des environs de St. Petersbourg dated 1792, recorded by Tooley and researched here in a copy in Florence, which, as likewise not in the Russian version, is additionally inscribed lower left Comp. par Wilbrecht en 1790.
Regarding the thought dating of the Russian version of the map it may be providently noted that Catherine II, on whom as czarina above cabinet edition is based, had passed away already in 1796 (Nov. 17) and subsequently only czars ruled.
Standing out among the canals the Ladoga Canal begun under Peter 1719 and since 1721 built by the appointed hydraulic engineer-general and lieutenant-general, Burchard Christoph von Münnich (Neuenhuntorf/Oldenburg 1683 – St. Petersburg 1767; Catherine the Great: “Even though Münnich is not a son, so he still is a father of the Russian Empire” & Frederick the Great: “Le Comte de Münnich était … le Prince Eugène de Moscovites”; the 4-plate map of this martial gloire in 2003 traded here into private Westphalian map collection). Finished 1732 the canal “should make Russia’s trade with the rest of Europe flourish … (and) has immortalized (Münnich’s) name in the department of hydraulic engineering” (ADB XXIII , 19 ff.). Recorded of course also the dams accompanying the water.
Of practically impeccable condition with uniformly fine margins around outer border line and inscriptions in the lower margin. Margins and border line a little stained here and there. A small original pleat affecting the edge of the cartouche. Left of the latter and in its full height a faint fold. Apart from that the marks of triple folding as a sign of actual occasional use outside (illegible back stamping without any trace in Lugt). As then also Wawrik, Austria picta, writes on occasion of a silk copy of Briffault’s map of the Italian theater of war:
“ … served – so in a (publisher’s) catalog of Briffault’s – , ‘pour la commodité des Officiers’, for folded they found place in any little coat-pocket. ”
But for which only leather would serve as the actually most practical printing material. But was not used at all! And therewith in the present case – dedicated doubtlessly to actual use on the spot outside –
advanced a cartographic anyway-rarity
to a preciousness of highest degree !

Invisible in closed state the image shows when fanning out the body of the book, here as one-image version to both sides, executed on the fore edge, whose subsequent gilding is “particularly difficult” (Löffler-Kirchner) due to its curve.
Occurring also double painting dependent on the side, while with triple painting one image is already visible in closed state. Generally such
unique edge decoration
– originally symbolic signs, later especially heraldic – dates back into the 10th century, to be extended to motifs of any kind by about the middle of the 18th century. The execution invisible in closed state, as here, dates back to 1649, the first dated example for this 1653 on a bible of 1651. The gilt edge on its part based on the Italian Renaissance bindings of the 15th century.
