In steel engravings after the most famous and most beautiful paintings in the great collections as the Dresden Gallery, the Pinakothek in Munich, the Berlin Museums, the Belvedere and several more. – Throughout with mostly English-German parallel caption. – Mostly only faint foxing here and there in the white margins not expressly mentioned in each case.

Subdivided into centuries, artists are in the order of their respective year of birth. Therefore the one or other may not appear in the century he belongs to artistically, but in the previous.

Pompeo Girolama Batoni

Magdalen. Lying before rock scenery and reading in a book. The hair open, one breast denuded. The book supported by a skull. Between the teeth of this the ear of some grass as symbol of hope. Joseph Sifrède Duplessis

Gluck. Playing on a spinet. Steel engraving by Johann Philipp Walther (Mühlhausen, Upper Palatinate, 1798 – Nuremberg 1868). 3rd quarter of the 19th century. 7 × 5⅜ in (17.7 × 13.8 cm).

Praised by Nagler as “one of the best French portrait painters” the Gluck portrait itself counting to Duplessis’ best paintings.

The Bathers. Seven graces bathing in a mountain rivulet in rich landscape. Coloured steel engraving by Charles Cousen (Yorkshire c. 1819 – 1889). 21 x 24.3 cm.

Christian Lebrecht Vogel
1759 Dresden 1816

The Brothers. The two sons of the artist – one the later Royal Saxon Court Painter Carl Christian Vogel von Vogelstein – sitting in a niche of the house and reading in a picture-spelling-book. Steel engraving by William French (c. 1815 – East Grinstead 1898). C. 1840. 6 × 6⅝ in (15.1 × 16.8 cm).

Vogel’s presumably most famous painting, worked during the years in Wildenfels whereto he was appointed by Count Solms in 1780. Painted in several versions the one here most likely engraved after the latest which the King of Saxony purchased for the Gallery in Dresden.

Main work of  Chisholm  (Thieme-Becker) of 1837. – Bathing scenes of this kind are quite rare.
